Jean Piaget, known as the father of developmental psychology, had come to the conclusion that action was the primary source of knowledge. Action first appears through our physical movements and then becomes transformed into mental thoughts. He is known for proposing the stages of cognitive development:
Sensory-motor period (birth to 2 years) cognition learned basically through reflexive action
Preoperational (2-7 years) cognition learned through an egocentric view;
Concrete Operational (7-11 years) cognition learned with an ability to understand multiple perspectives but only in concrete manner;
Formal Operational (adolescence – adult) able to learn through a means of hypothetical questioning and reasoning.
NEURON-DO® recognizes the student’s cognitive development has an impact on their perception of the action being taught and that the action being taught can open the mind to different perceptions which can further their cognitive development.
